Budgets

So, Geoff and I decided to start budgeting our money, since we seem to just spend frivolously, and not know where our money is really going. We have tried implemeting budgets before, but I think this time it is going to stick. At least we hope so.

The downside of this is that we have very specific places where every nickle and dime is supposed to go, and if we need something we have to save up.

At this point in time, we NEED something...and this something is a bigger carseat for Paityn. She is at least 30 inches and has outgrown her infant seat, so it is time for the big car seat! I called Geoff to tell him I was going to look into purchasing one, which would cost about $220, and he said, "well, we will have to figure out where to cut back so we can buy it"

Are we supposed to cut back on groceries, so that we can safely transport our daugther around? I think that something like this should come out of the EXTRA money, like where we put the leftovers into savings. Do you all agree, or should we eat Top Ramen for the month so that we can buy this item, that is a necessity?

I would understand if it was just a WANT, then we would have to save and scrimp in other places, but come on, a car seat for Paityn, I think this should be an exception, don't you?

Oh, p.s. I am looking into the Britax Marathon Carseat which is reversible and holds a child up to 65 lbs. so we won't ever need another one for her! (thanks to Karen for this tip)

Stinky budgets! The Marathon is an excellent seat (also letting you keep them rearfacing to
33 lbs), I have one myself!, but if you want some less expensive options that do the same thing I would love to give you some suggestions. It is so nice that companies are finally starting to come out with higher weight harnessing seats besides Britax. it gives us more options. Email me if you want.

I agree with you - a car seat is something that is not a luxury, it's a necessity and should be on that list. Also if you can use the same one until 65 lbs that is good too.

I assume you are getting that tax rebate thing - if you are- maybe use that towards it. That's extra money

Maybe see if you can buy the exact same item online cheaper or find a coupon for the store online - like find a discount code for Target or something then buying it at a store - even 5 or 10% would be good.

Joy,
I have the Britax Marathon and I love it. I say when it comes to safety you don't go cheap. I actually found mine at Costco, of all places and it was $60.00 cheaper than Babies R Us, and it is the exact same carseat. I haven't seen it there since, but you could try online at costco. And by the way, since Jon is a CPA he is all about the budget, and it has really helped us. It is hard, but better in the end. Good luck! :)

Oh the joy of budgets! Marcus and I stick to one as diligently as we can...but it really can be hard...especially when we get a decent amount put away in our savings. For some reason it is harder then, because I feel like we're doing ok and I just want to go spend some of it or stop putting as much into our savings and spend that instead. BUT as we have stuck to it we have been SO HAPPY! If we didn't have a good savings when Connor was born we would have been in SO MUCH TROUBLE financially because with all the complications we ended up meeting our out-of-pocket insurance maximum and that meant for one hefty bill. It was so nice to just have the money and pay it.

Anyway, good luck! I looked at the Britax Marathon and loved it but ended up getting the Alpha Omega Elite (which goes from 5 lbs to 100 lbs and can work as a rear facing, forward facing, and high back booster). It was about $140 and I LOVE IT! It has been fantastic and I plan on getting a second for my next baby.

That looks a great car seat , especially if you don't need to get another one , then you save money in the end ! and of course safety is paramout,

Joy,

You rock. I totally love your honesty. We lucked out because someone gave us a sweet car seat when Caleb needed one, and I agree that it is a necessity :)
