Driving through Guardsman Pass

I had a great idea today after watching the morning news; drive up the canyon to see the leaves changing colors. Well, the weather man had said that the drive up through Guardsman Pass was a beautiful one so I took his word, called Geoff, made plans, and Geoff came home early from work so that we as a family could make the drive and see the beauty of the leaves, and take fun photos. About 4 pm we loaded up baby, puppy, ourselves, and the camera and got on the road. Geoff asked me to drive because he had purchased some books on photographing and wanted to read them on the way up. I agreed because I would have an easier time on the winding roads if I were behind the wheel. Well, we drove through Big Cottonwood Canyon, past Solitude Ski Resort and onto the road up over into Park City. The beginning of the drive, um, not so many changing colors, then as we continued, the colors began to become very vibrant, and the higher in elevation we got, the fewer colors we saw. This was dissapointing to both Geoff and I, but especially Geoff because he was skeptical of the long drive in the first place. I just had to be optimistic and enjoy the drive while Geoff complained about everything from his sweaty back against the seat, to the dwindling of the sunlight as time passed. As we continued the drive, the road became more narrow, and the elevation became more steep...and I got scared, anxiety had hit me! About the time we got to the dirt road at the steepest point, I pulled over...mind you, pulling over, meaning, stopping in the middle of the road because I didn't want to get too close to the edge, and had Geoff drive the remainder of the way. We stopped a few times heading into Park City, but there wasn't much to stop for, not what I was expecting when Mr. Weatherman expressed the need for everyone to take a drive up the beautiful canyons this time of year! The best shots we got were pictures Geoff took of flowers (weeds) and I took of Paityn (inside the car), what a fun 3 hour drive we had!! So....I warn you, if you want to enjoy the beauty of the leaves, wait a few weeks, or just don't drive so far...it's not worth it! (but it was fun spending time with my little family)

Now I am going to call the News station and complain!!!

Joy,
Dad and I had a good laugh as I read your blog out loud :) I don't blame you for being disappointed. We probably have just as much color in our trees down here!
I love seeing all the pictures of Paityn and can't wait to see her next week (and you and Geoff, of course). Dad asked why she wasn't wearing her little mocassins in the picture, especially since it looks like her tiny feet are blue!
Love,
Mom
