Obviously the title is self-explanatory, but I want to remember just exactly what happened that day.
First of all, last week I had a lot to get done. On Monday we went to Lehi to play with the Harper family, and we had so much fun. Swimming, eating, playing games, and just hanging out. After swimming I took a shower, and used Heather's Proactiv face wash and lotion (BAD idea). The next day I woke up itching terribly. I couldn't leave my house. For the next two days, I was covered with itchy red swollen patches. They would show up in once place, disappear, and then show up somewhere else. At one point my eyes were almost swollen closed. Thursday I woke up feeling great. No more itching, the HIVES were gone!
I babysit the twins on Thursday mornings for 2 hours. I figured at noon, when they left I would finally get around to going grocery shopping, and doing other things that I needed to get done.
AT 11:55 am (exactly, I just looked at my phone record) I dialed 9-1-1 on my cell phone. I don't think I have ever done that in my life. I hope to never do that again.
Lets go back...the twins got to our house and we went outside to play about 10:30 am.They were all playing fine, having fun. We came inside about 11:30 am, and Paityn climbed up on the couch while the twins played. Beck was fussy so I put him down for his nap early, ( maybe at 11:50 am) so I could run my errands when he woke up. I came downstairs about 11: 51, ran into the kitchen for a second, and then when I came into the front room I noticed Paityn laying there, with a blank stare, and then about a split second later, I grabbed her as she started to seizure. I don't remember ALL the details, because I was in a panic. Really, I had no clue what a seizure could cause. Death, brain damage, unconciousness. I didn't know.
The seizure was more just in her face and eyes, not her limbs flailing about. As I grabbed her, I ran to the home phone (stupid magic jack) I dialed 911 and didn't immediately here ringing, so I hung up and grabbed my cell phone. When the dispatcher answered, she asked my address, and I stumbled through it, I think it took 3 tries before she understood me. I just said "my 2 year old is seizuring, please help her". She asked if she was breathing, so I checked her pulse and told her each time she took a breath.
She then told me to unlock all doors, turn on outside lights, and wait. Paityn started throwing up at this point while I was holding her. Then I layed her on her side (that's what the dispatcher said to do) and I waited. About 5 minutes went by and no sirens coming our way. I was anxious. The fire department is less than 5 minutes away. I called back, and dispatch said they were on there way. Did they get lost? What would have happened if she was not breathing? Luckily, she was.
Her seizure lasted, I am guessing, 1 minute, then the throw up. Then just a dazed look. Exhaustion.
15 MINUTES went by before paramedics showed up. Really? I was not happy. I had called Geoff right after I called 911. He was studying at his mom's house (further away then the fire dept.) and got home before they arrived. Does this make any of you mad? I called the twins mom, so she could come get them, and to explain what happened. Then I called Granny, so she could come watch Beck while we went to the hospital. She got there just as paramedics arrived. Having Granny Lyn around was a blessing. She always works on Thursdays, but had taken this day off. Thank goodness!
The paramedics came in, took her temperature, checked her oxygen level. Everything was fine. They asked some questions about what had happened, and then asked what hospital we would like to go to. I said Jordan Valley Hospital. That is Geoff's place of employment. The paramedic looked at me, like, "are you sure?" so I said, "well, where do you think I should take her?" He said, Primary Children's Medical center. So, that's where we went. They took Paityn's car seat out of our car, and buckled it onto the stretcher. I then took Paityn out to the ambulance, and got her in the car seat.
She was out of it. I thought it was a bit strange that she wasn't freaking out with all this stuff going on. The paramedic said that after a seizure you are beyond VERY tired. I could tell. She was trying to keep her eyes open as we drove to the hospital. At one point, she threw up again. After that she became a little more alert, and started crying. Probably realizing, "where the heck am I?" She said "mom, trash can", and pointed. This made me laugh because I knew exactly what she was thinking. She LOVES when big trucks drive by, especially the trash truck, and we were in a big truck, so obviously it had to be the trash truck, right? haha. I said, no this isn't the trash truck. This is the ambulance.
I was very calm. I knew everything was ok. We were in good hands. We were being watched over.
It was about a 45 minute drive to the hospital. We got there, they wheeled her in, I met the doctor, told him briefly what happened and then Geoff arrived. They took her blood test, and then we waited and waited and they took two more tests. EET and CAT scan. All tests came back negative for anything of great concern.
In between tests, Paityn layed on the bed and slept. She was still really out of it. Nothing seemed to bother her. Well, until the CAT scan, where they had to strap her down. Luckily, being a children's hospital they had toys to distract her, and gave her princess stickers when she was done. First thing she said, was "I have to show Maycee Jane, she wants to see my stickers" (Maycee is her best friend. They both love the Disney princesses).
The nurse brought her a yummy slushy, and a gatorade. She didn't want much of either one. Still tired. Still just wanting to be held and close her eyes. Luckily her daddy was there. She sure does love him.
About 4:30 we finally were told the results, and sent on our way.
We meet with the Neurologist tomorrow, Tuesday August 17th. It is just a check-up to make sure everything is going well. They will possibly do an MRI. I don't know all the details.
I know, as I write things down, I skip ahead and then go back again. Sorry. I am bad at getting all my thoughts lined up. I just write them as they come to mind.
With all that was going on, I wanted to just be able to relax as a family. I wanted to get away from the reality of day to day. So, Friday we headed up to Park City for the night. We left about 1:30, got to the shopping outlets at 2:30, and shopped until about 4:30, then on to the hotel we went. Not much else took place. We ate at Cafe Rio for dinner. Sleeping didn't go well. Lets just say the trip was NOT relaxing. Beck could climb right out of the crib they provided, and he just wanted to run around the hotel room, rather than sleep. Finally about midnight we all got to bed. Not a good thing, since we were all tired. Especially Geoff. He had worked Thursday night immediately after leaving the hospital with Paityn, and got home Friday morning at 6 am. Next time we want to relax we will remember this overnighter, and stay home. Let the kids sleep in their own rooms, which would allow us to enjoy our night. It was nice though, just to be together, and remember what really matters in life.
SO glad Paityn is doing well. Glad the tests came back negative. Grateful for friends and family, who love us, and care about us so much, they would do anything for our family.
And on a sad note: Paityn is sick today. She is crying for my attention now. I need to hold her. Make her feel better. She is precious to me.

Oh Joy how scary! Was it a febrile (sp?) sezuire? (man, can't spell that either!)
Conner, my middle guy, had 4 of those between ages 3 and 4. It was scary but he's totally fine.
I feel for you because we basically experienced what you did and it really was so scary!
I am glad she is okay!
Hi Joy,
I've been thinking of you & your family a lot since your last post. Glad you filled us in on what happened.
This must've been so scary. I know that Heavenly Father was watching over you but is still must have been so scary.
Sorry to hear that Paityn isn't very well. Hope she feels better soon.
Take care & I love your blog.
Hi Joy,
When I was 16 (I'm 46 now) I started having seizures. (Completely drained after each one just like you said Paityn was and sometimes I would just sit and stare at the wall for hours after one as well.) I was taken to UCLA Medical Center and was given multiple Cat Scans, full body x rays, an Angiogram, EEG and many other tests.
Although they couldn't really find anything to point to on the Cat Scans etc. they decided that I must have had a brain tumor and that they needed to remove it and my pituitary gland as well. I told my mother I knew it wasn't a tumor and begged her not to sign the form for the operation.
At home, all my symptoms/problems continued on unchanged but about six months later a different group of doctors finally figured out I was highly/severely allergic to the city we had just moved to. (Same city your Aunt Marie lived in during the Sony talk show years.) I was treated for all sorts of severe and somewhat uncommon allergies and slowly but surely I improved and the seizures eventually stopped as well.
Anytime I hear a story like Paityn's or anything relatively close sounding to what I had I like to mention the possibility of Allergies just in case it might help in some way.
You, Geoff, Paityn, Beck and Milo will be in my thoughts and prayers.

That is so scary! Marshall had a couple febrile seizures when he was 1 1/2 - 2 and we never did find out what caused them. But for a parent to watch that happening is sooo terrifying. Good luck with everything!
Hard to know what to say, reading the details sound even more scary. Hope you never have to go through that again.
Hope all went well at the doctors.

Hey Joy! I am so sorry to hear about that with Paityn. I am so glad, she is doing better now. Thinking about you guys! Hang in there!! :)
Wow. What an experience. So glad Paityn is doing better. I hope you can find out what caused it. Did you ever check why it took so long for the paramedics to get there?
